Plans:
⧫ I will capture images using a polaroid camera (Fujifilm Instax Mini 8)
⧫ I will capture images using a digital camera (Canon EOS 450D)
⧫ I will edit the digital photographs using Photoshop CC 2014
⧫ I will create a large scale photomontage of my subjects
⧫ I will place the polaroids around the photomontage to create an installation piece
Hope to Achieve:
What I hope to achieve for my second examination photoshoot is to depict identity and its construction through the use of a second subject. I will be photographing my singular model and will digitally, and, or physically create a photo joiner composite of the photographs. I will then either print the individual photographs and remake the photo joiner fully or I will print the digitally created photomontage as large as I can and then, either way, I will place it onto a large sheet of card and organise the polaroids around the images.
I am hoping that my finalised pieces will show my development as a result of my preparatory shoots and also my preparatory research. Moreover, I also am hoping to use physical experimentation to create a photographic installation that fits the exam topic of connected images but also my theme of identity in an aesthetically pleasing way.
Actually Achieved:
I was relatively happy with the initial outcome of exam shoot 1 despite the fact that the camera and studio set up was lacking and the two lights had different soft box diffusers meaning that more light was reaching one side than the other no matter how many times I moved the lighting units.
However, I was more satisfied with the digital final outcome of this shoot when contrasted to that of the first photoshoot. The photo joiner was made using Photoshop which meant that I was able to experiment with multiple transformation such as adjusting scale to create a more dynamic final, digital, piece. I was using tools such as scale as both a technical feature to improve aesthetic but also in a symbolic way that links with my recurring theme of identity. The larger the scale of the item or symbol that refers to something else the more important it is in that persons life.
Progression:
This was the second photoshoot of my exam time and I am satisfied in saying that I will be adapting my ideas for my next shoot to incorporate more elements of my preparatory work and also to work more so within an area of photography that I enjoy. These two shoots so far have been an experimentation and development of my skills to improve my overall ability as a photographer but I am much more intrigued by the methods of documentary and photoessay photography than studio portraiture. As such, I plan on referring back to my preparations and employing a scrapbooking or photoessay idea about identity as was seen in my first five photoshoots of preparation. As a way to avoid creating a pastiche of my previous works I am planning to instead focus my ideas of identity somewhat away from self-percieved identity and toward collective identity by focusing on gender or age and such.
Process -
ISO: 200
F/ Stop: F/11
Shutter Speed: 1/125
Final -
The above computer experimentation depicts my friend who is a drummer and as such his music is vital to his identity. Moreover the hands that form the fist and the other gesture are connotative of his personality traits and hobbies. The drumming is hugely significant, the fist symbolises his interest in MMA and the other gesture is a reference to balance. The other items that were photographed using my polaroid camera featured items of significance such as a necklace with an inherited family ring which emphasises the importance of family in his identity. Once again the polaroid also depicts headphones which further the importance of music in the subjects life as both a musician and avid listener with a huge variety of music appreciation.
